As we have long suspected, if your site has been hit with a Penguin penalty by Google, it will take an algorithm refresh for you to have any chance of recovering from this penalty on your present site. Google confirmed this today (see video below for an explanation and a rant from a fellow SEOer.)
What this means is that should you have a manual or automatic penalty relating to anchor text or inbound links, it will not cure itself anytime soon. As of this writing, it has been more than 300 days since the last algorithm update. Even if you have fixed all the infringing links, and your site is up to snuff in every other respect, you are still in the penalty box. And, since no one knows when the next algorithm update will be, you are, in effect, dead in the water until that unknown date. It could be next week, or it could be next year.
We have ways to get you back in the game in the meantime. But for now, don’t hold your breath that Google will be able to do much of anything other than make you wait.
